Last year, over 30 imprisoned women learned how to make decisions via support of 40 Volunteers.  Yet, 115 women applied to take our education program.

We need your help to reach more students in 2019!

Help us Help Her - Consider Becoming a Mentor or Teacher (or Donor) Today!

Since 1985, we've taught incarcerated women how to make better decisions!

As a volunteer-driven organization that, for more than 32 years, our organization has attracted women who seek personal and meaningful volunteer experiences.  Better Decisions brings together women from varied backgrounds and gives them a unique opportunity to learn from each other. We've trained more than 1,200 volunteers who have taught and mentored over 1,500 women incarcerated in Nashville at the TN Prison for Women (TPW) and other area locations.  Today, we are a growing and vibrant organization.  Please join us in educating Nashville!

By choosing to participate in our 20-hour structured program, these TPW inmates learn life skills designed to help them gain more control over their lives, increase self esteem and feel empowered to make better choices.  After attending weekly classroom and mentoring sessions for 8 weeks, they graduate from Better Decisions with new skills and hope for a brighter future for themselves and their children.  Dozens of women participate in our programs annually, approximately 20 per term offered each spring and fall.

We would love to hear from you if you have an interest in volunteering with Better Decisions (see below). Volunteers must be at least 21 years old and have no criminal record. Once we receive your e-mail, we will follow up to conduct a telephone interview. Next steps would include completing a Tennessee Dept of Corrections application and attendance at both a TDOC policy & procedure training session and a Better Decisions curriculum and mentorship training event (15 hours total).

Please email if you are interested in learning more or complete a form on our Contact Us page.

Honoring Volunteer Janice Lewis

We learned yesterday that former volunteer, Janice Lewis, has passed away.

Mrs. Lewis trained as a Better Decisions Mentor four (4) years ago, mentored several women inmates, and was a delight to all who knew her. Fellow Mentors Martha Johnson, Cathy McCall and Cindy Blackburn were all friends and church members with Janice at First Presbyterian Church in Franklin TN.

A celebration of life service for Janice Lewis is Tues., September 12th ,11:00am at 1st Presbyterian Church, 101 Legends Club Lane, Franklin.
